Hanoi (VNA) - Vietnam’s sea is an integral part of the East Sea - a geographical area rich in natural resources. The country is richly endowed with a variety of marine minerals.

The waters and continental shelf under Vietnam’s sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction spread over an area of more than 1 million square kilometres, three times higher than the country’s land area.

- Abundant resources of oil and gas

Petroleum is the largest natural resources in the continental shelf of the country and it is of strategic importance. To date, Vietnam has identified its total oil and gas potential in sedimentary basins: Song Hong, Phu Khanh, Nam Con Son, Cuu Long, Malay - Tho Chu, Tu Chinh- Vung May.

The total oil and gas reserves in the entire continental shelf of Vietnam reach about 10 billion tonnes of oil equivalent. In addition, Vietnam also has gas reserves of approximately 3,000 billion m3/year.

- Solid minerals

Vietnam has found over 5,000 mines and deposits of more than 60 different minerals, ranging from energy minerals, metals to industrial materials and construction materials which are found mostly in the coastal areas

- Endless resources of salt

Sea salt is the major natural resources of the country. With more than 3,260km long coastline, Vietnam boasts more than 20 coastal provinces engaging in salt production, generating over 80,000 jobs, producing 800,000 -1.2 million tons/year./.
